What does “normal value” mean?
“Normal value” is the estimated median from the four formulas developed in the preceding analysis. These medians were modeled from study means and variability; they are not directly measured population medians or validated national norms.
The formula is rounded to the nearest whole repetition. Your difference uses that same rounded count. A positive result is green, a negative result is red, and an equal result is neutral. The comparison is not a percentile or a pass/fail grade.
| Reference | Ages | Study |
|---|---|---|
| Male · toes | 15–69 | Payne 2000 |
| Female · toes | 18–24 | Adams 2022 |
| Male · knees | 10–60* | Nassif 2012 |
| Female · knees | 15–69 | Payne 2000 |
*Male knee-supported estimates at ages 61–69 extrapolate the formula beyond the source study’s oldest age. Female toe-supported estimates use one group median for ages 18–24; they do not establish an age trend. At other ages, the calculator compares your result with this same 18–24-year group, not an estimated norm for your own age.
The original modeling interpolated means and variances between age groups and used a negative-binomial distribution to estimate medians. Payne SDs were reconstructed from rounded standard errors. Study populations and test protocols differ; toe and knee counts cannot be converted or directly compared using these references.

How to do the test
This calculator was co-developed with ChatGPT Astra (OpenAI), and its calculations were tested against modeled reference values derived from the original research articles.
